Jimmy Butler questionable to return in 2026-27
The Golden State Warriors made a bold move when they signed Jimmy Butler to an extension, hoping to get at least two strong seasons alongside Stephen Curry. Instead, that vision is already in jeopardy.
After suffering a torn ACL in late January, Butler faces a long recovery that could sideline him until February at the earliest. That timeline alone puts a major dent in Golden State’s plans. More importantly, it raises the question of whether Butler will even prioritize returning to the team next season, especially with free agency looming.
Jimmy Butler’s Contract History Tells a Story
Butler’s career has consistently shown one thing: contract security matters. Without a long-term deal in place, he has rarely hesitated to make bold moves that protect his financial future.
His exit from the Miami Heat is a recent example. After being denied an extension, tensions escalated into suspensions before he was ultimately traded. Similar situations unfolded with the Minnesota Timberwolves and even earlier with the Chicago Bulls, which led to stops with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Golden State faces a tricky situation here. The team cannot offer Butler another extension until February 2027. By then, the roster, coaching staff, and overall competitiveness of the franchise could look very different—making it difficult to count on Butler as part of any long-term plan.
The Warriors Are Stuck in an Uncertain Position
For now, the Warriors are caught in a difficult spot. Butler’s contract carries a massive cap hit, yet his injury leaves his on-court impact uncertain. At the same time, Curry is nearing the final stages of his career, and head coach Steve Kerr has no guaranteed future with the team.
Golden State could end up paying nearly $57 million for a season in which Butler contributes very little—or possibly not at all. That kind of financial commitment limits flexibility at a time when the team needs it most.
Searching for Answers Without a Clear Solution
The Warriors have already explored ways to remain competitive, including attempts to land stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kawhi Leonard. While those pursuits didn’t materialize, the team did acquire Kristaps Porzingis—another player without long-term security.
In theory, Butler’s contract could be used in a trade to match salaries. In reality, his injury makes that option far less appealing. Few teams are willing to dedicate such a large portion of their salary cap to a player who may not even take the court.
A Murky Future in Golden State
There’s no easy solution for the Warriors. The combination of Butler’s injury, contract uncertainty, and the team’s aging core creates a cloudy outlook.
If the situation continues to trend in this direction, Butler’s time in Golden State may end up being brief. What once looked like a promising partnership could instead become a short-lived experiment—one that never fully had the chance to succeed.
