The partner of US influencer Ashly Robinson has had his passport “withheld” by police in Zanzibar, authorities said, as investigations continue into her death last week while on holiday in the Tanzanian islands.

Joe McCann, 45, is currently speaking to police as a witness. Officials say no arrests have been made, and McCann is not considered a suspect.

Robinson, 31—also known online as Ashlee Jenae—was found unconscious in her villa before being taken to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Zanzibar police had earlier told the BBC that Robinson may have attempted to take her own life. However, investigators say they are still awaiting a full medical examination report as inquiries continue.

In a statement, police confirmed that investigations remain ongoing, including analysis of medical findings and witness accounts.

Robinson’s parents have questioned the circumstances surrounding her death, saying it “doesn’t make any sense” and that they are seeking clarity.

“She was supposed to be happy,” her mother, Yolanda Endres, told CBS News, describing her daughter as “a light” and a “beautiful person.”

The family said Robinson had recently celebrated her birthday and become engaged during the trip. “And then she is just gone,” her mother added.

Authorities said the couple reportedly had a misunderstanding prior to the incident, after which hotel staff separated them into different rooms. The hotel, Zuri Zanzibar, has not confirmed those details but said it is cooperating with officials and the US embassy.

Police chief Benedict Mapujira said staff raised concerns after one guest was suspected of being suicidal. Robinson was later taken to hospital but died the following day, on April 9.

The US State Department confirmed the death of an American citizen in Zanzibar, stating it is monitoring the situation and prioritizing citizen safety abroad.

Days before her death, Robinson had posted images and videos from her trip on social media, including visits to tourist locations in Tanzania. Tributes have since been shared across her online pages.
