Warriors meet with Darvin Ham about assistant coaching role

According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Golden State Warriors have spoken with former Los Angeles Lakers coach Darvin Ham about joining Steve Kerr’s coaching staff as an assistant.

For now though, that looks like a distant shot.

“(T)he Warriors are contemplating a coaching staff addition regardless of whether the Cavaliers hire (Kenny Atkinson), which would follow the Mike Brown and Jama Mahlalela departures in recent years and the tragic loss of Dejan Milojević this past January,” Slater wrote. “The Warriors had some conversation with former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham in recent weeks, per league sources. That isn’t expected to materialize.

“But it is a signal of the Warriors’ desire to add a big-name assistant, and indications are they are in search of either a former head coach or former player to fill the role.”

Slater continued by saying that the Warriors might bring on two assistants in the event if Atkinson left.

Ham is anticipated to bide his time until the offseason to see what might happen. Though his name hasn’t been mentioned in connection with any openings, it’s thought that he is looking for another head coaching position.

The Lakers finished 90-74 in Ham’s two seasons. The Denver Nuggets swept them in the 2023 Western Conference Finals, and they fell to them once more in five games during this year’s opening round.
