Warriors, Klay Thompson don’t want to part ways this summer

NBA insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints claims that Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors do not intend to part ways this summer.

This summer, Thompson becomes an unrestricted free agent. The 34-year-old desires to sign a new contract with the Warriors and play professional basketball for just one team.

“This doesn’t necessarily mean it is time to leave the Warriors, as neither side wants this to happen, league sources informed ClutchPoints,” Siegel wrote.

Thompson is shooting 42.6% from the field, 38.3% from outside the arc, and 91.7% from the free-throw line this season, averaging 17.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists. His salary is $43.2 million.

In the 2011 NBA Draft, the Warriors selected Thompson, a Washington State graduate, with the eleventh overall choice. With Golden State, Thompson has been a member of five All-Star teams, two All-NBA teams, and one All-Defensive team.

“Remaining with the Warriors is still at the forefront of Thompson’s mind, sources said, even though this may be the last chance in his career to pursue a large contract on the open market, given his name and history,” Siegel wrote.

With the Warriors having won four titles under Thompson, Stephen Curry, and Draymond Green’s leadership, Thompson has frequently stated that he wants to retire with the team. Even though Thompson is not the same player he once was, the Warriors’ decision to not re-sign the shooter would surprise many in the NBA.

“Klay’s not going anywhere,” one NBA executive predicted while chatting with Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. “The Warriors can’t let him walk. He’s a four-time champion, and they can’t really replace him. At some point, if a player isn’t getting the job done and still wants to play as he gets older, you’d come off the bench, and he’s doing that while playing better. Maybe they tie his deal to Steph’s. Klay’s value is in the $20-25 million range.”
