Klay Thompson Acknowledges That It Would Be “Very Difficult” For Him To Imagine Not Being A Warriors Player

It would be “so hard” for Klay Thompson to see himself not being a member of the Golden State Warriors, he said to NBA reporter Anthony Slater of The Athletic.

Thompson’s contract is set to expire in one year. This season, his salary will be $43.2 million. In the summer of 2019, the All-Star agreed to a five-year, $189.9 million deal with the Warriors.

Thompson played for the Warriors in 69 games the previous year. The four-time champion shot 43.6% from the field, 41.2% from outside the arc, and 87.9% from the free-throw line while averaging 21.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. The Warriors finished as the sixth seed in the Western Conference playoffs after winning 44 games.

In the first round of the 2023 playoffs, Golden State defeated the Sacramento Kings in seven games, but fell short against the Los Angeles Lakers in six games in the second round. Thompson averaged 18.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists by the end of the 2023 postseason. Against the Kings and Lakers, he shot just 38.8% overall and 36.8% from three in 13 games.

Tim Kawakami of The Athletic spoke with Joe Lacob, the owner of the Warriors, on Thompson’s potential future with the team. Thompson’s current contract expires in July of next year, but Lacob stated he believes he will stay with the organization past this season.

“It is,” Jacob replied. “So far, we’ve only had a few quick conversations with his agency. However, they are really early. .. We’ll see if we can work something out so that Klay can stay here for a long period, as we obviously would like him to, and I absolutely expect that we’ll have some meaningful negotiations shortly.

With the Warriors, Thompson has averaged 19.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists throughout his career. Five All-Star teams, two NBA All-Star teams, and one All-Defensive team have been made by the Washington State product.
