Report: Warriors currently exploring ‘Surprising’ trade

According to a recent piece by ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, the Golden State Warriors are considering trading one of their promising young players, like Jonathan Kuminga, for a high draft pick.

Given the limited time they have to make the most of Steph Curry’s peak, Givony recognized that the Warriors may not have a strong desire to take on additional youth projects, but he did indicate that they would be open to considering a trade for a high lottery pick.

This is a shocking report because the Warriors have struggled to get Kuminga consistent rotational minutes, which makes it difficult to comprehend why they would trade him for another young player rather than a veteran who needs to win right away. Golden State may feel that moving up in the draft will benefit their club both now and in the future because they like a certain draft prospect who is expected to go before their 19th pick.

The Warriors would need to be rather certain that Kuminga doesn’t have a clear route to the role he might desire next season if they were to cut ways with him. Kuminga’s current and intended roles have reportedly not aligned, so it wouldn’t be strange if that were a factor influencing Golden State’s willingness to move a player of his caliber for a higher draft pick.
